Tackling racism remains one of the key challenges in our society. Across Europe, refugees are still being left to drown – or to live in squalor in camps such as Calais. Anti migrant racism is being fuelled in the run up to the triggering of Article 50 to leave the EU. Islamophobia has led to a spike in anti-Muslim hate crime, especially against Muslim women.

On the other hand race hate crimes have been met by communities coming together to reject the scapegoating.

Newham NUT have agreed to support this important local rally aiming to bring together all those opposed to racism and division in our community.

Refugees and migrants welcome here! No to Racism, Islamophobia and Antisemitism!

“Prevent: Why we should dissent”

“Prevent: Why we should dissent” Poster from booklet.
“Prevent: Why we should dissent”

Stand Up to Racism and Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) have produced an important pamphlet on the Prevent Duty – “Prevent: Why we should dissent”. It is aimed at exposing the fallacy of the claims behind Prevent and the divisive nature of that agenda. It is intended to provide information that teachers, students, parents and public sector workers need and to argue why it is so important for our communities and particularly our young people to encourage dissent.

It is the national policy of the NUT that Prevent should be withdrawn as a statutory duty in education; last year’s motion passed at annual conference is published in the pamphlet.

The pamphlet includes contributions from Michael Mansfield QC; Alex Kenny, NUT executive; Shelly Asquith, NUS vice president; Azad Ali (MEND); Dave Muritu, UCU executive. It also includes contributions from Muslim women with experience of Prevent, Preventwatch, and from Rob Ferguson who is an officer of newham Teachers Association.

Newham Teachers’ association is sending a copy to every NUT rep / school. We would encourage reps to promote the pamphlet to members.

You can order copies here

or for bulk orders email with ‘Prevent pamphlet order’ in the subject line, how many pamphlets you’d like, your email address and a telephone number.

Girls’ Education: Half a billion women can’t read this

130 million girls are out of school right now. If they were a country, they would make up the world’s 10th largest – bigger than Japan or Germany.

That’s an obscene amount of untapped potential.

These girls deserve the same chance to get an education as all of us.

I just signed ONE’s letter that urges our leaders to help millions more girls get into school in the next 4 years. Will you sign it, too?

The letter is going to be hand-delivered on March 8th – International Women’s Day – to leaders all around the world, so we need to get as many signatures as possible to make sure we’re heard loud and clear.
