NEU and the Fire Brigades Union wrote a letter to Damian Hinds about schools being rebuilt without fire sprinklers and the serious consequences this could have for pupils and teachers. Grenfell Tower should have been a defining moment in the way we view safety in public buildings but it seems that health and safety is still seen as an opportunity to cut corners and save money.

Workers’ Memorial Day 2017 event. Stratford, E15 Friday 28 April
A ceremony was held in Stratford to remember workers who lost their lives while at work. It was held at the Three Mills Green memorial to 4 local workers who lost their lives here.
A press release – “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” – was circulated by the TUC to mark the event.
Peter Smith, NUT Divisional Secretary said “We need to develop an anti-austerity campaign to ensure the Health & Safety legislation is properly funded and help avoid these unnecessary deaths at work in the future.”
